About KC Girls Prep: Our Vision

  • Our mission is to prepare young women to use their voices, succeed in college, and lead impactful, meaningful lives.

  • We strive to provide a college preparatory experience, starting in 5th grade, through academic and social development that will allow students to pursue their own educational and professional goals.

  • KC Girls Prep is a community, where we support and trust one another in sisterhood. Through mutual support, we are constantly growing to be our best selves. Here, our scholars have the freedom to create opportunities to think, speak, and act with courage and purpose.

Why an all-girls school?

Gender and race matter in schooling, not because girls learn differently, but because of normative social and cultural beliefs that obstruct the progress of young women.

Why here? Why now?

KC Girls Prep was intentionally placed in the middle of a geographic region at 17th and Van Brunt that has long been under served by the current system. School performance data for Girls Prep’s primary zip codes reflect the reality of limited access to strong school options.

We welcomed our founding 5th grade class in 2019, and at the time only four out of fourteen schools within KC Girls Prep’s primary zip codes had more than one-third of students proficient in math and reading.

At the heart of our purpose, we want to right the imbalance of services received by Black and Brown girls in the traditional public school culture to create equitable experiences for all.

More than just a school

We are truly a social justice organization that is transforming lives through education. Long before 2020, KC Girls Prep had already put a stake in the ground as an anti-racist, equity focused agent for social change.

We focus on the whole girl

We go beyond our rich, multicultural curriculum to serve the social and emotional needs of our students and their families. We ensured that our scholars and their siblings were fed throughout the pandemic. Our social worker and school counselor have spent hundreds of hours connecting families with the services they need. We believe if a scholar does not feel safe and loved, she cannot learn. This combination of heart and mind is one of the defining features of our school.

  • Women's Empowerment

We are dedicated to empowering our students to become confident, capable, and courageous young women. We believe in fostering an environment where girls are encouraged to dream big, take on challenges, and pursue their passions without limits.

  • Equitable Access

Our school is working to break down barriers and ensure that every student, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. We hope to empower the next generation of leaders to solve social challenges, drive positive change, and create a more equitable future.

  • Whole-Girl Approach

KC Girls Prep is committed to supporting not only the academic success of our students but also their social and emotional well-being. Middle school is a critical time for personal growth and development, and we aim to create a safe and nurturing environment where every student feels heard, valued, and supported.

  • College Readiness

We are an affiliate of The Young Women’s Leadership Schools. This national network of all-girls schools, founded in 1996 and now with more than two dozen partner schools across the country, has ensured college access for thousands of young women from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
